Cake Size and Shape

There are two main factors in deciding the size of your cake: the number of guests attending your wedding and those who are unable to attend your reception, to whom you may wish to send some cake later.

» Size of Cake It is always very difficult to give accurate figures for the number of portions which a particular cake size will produce, but the figures below will give you a rough guide:

These figures are for Rich Fruit cakes. Sponge cakes will produce
up to 1/3 less portions, as portions need to be slightly larger.

Should you wish to have a larger amount of cake, it is possible to make an extra tier, which is not displayed, but is cut and served by the catering staff, to add to the wedding cake. This is particularly useful if you expect to have an unusually large number of guests but would prefer not to have an unusually large cake! This extra tier may be made of Rich Fruit or Victoria Sponge, to suit your choice. Another factor that may affect your choice is how you imagine your finished cake to look. For instance, if you are holding a small reception, perhaps for 20 or 30 guests, then a single 8 inch round cake will provide you with sufficient portions, but may not match the image of your wedding cake that you had in mind. Often a combination of these two factors will play a part   in your final decision.

Shape Options

A wide variety of shapes can be used, including hexagonal, heart and petal shapes as well as the traditional round or square cakes. Don't feel you have to choose a square cake simply because it will be easier to cut. Your caterers will be well experienced in cutting any shape of cake efficiently for you. However, remember that a heart or petal shape will give you fewer portions than an equivalent sized, square cake.
